Have you thought about giving the gift of relaxation?
Seriously, we all know how stressful the holidays get. You’re trying to figure out what to buy for your mother-in-law or your boyfriend’s little sister’s best friend who’s practically his little sister, every weekend is suddenly booked with holiday parties, you have to bake something for each of those parties, plus find an ugly sweater...and don’t even get me started on trying to figure out who you want to send holiday cards to -- do you send to your second cousin who you haven’t seen in two years?
Okay, maybe I’m overanalyzing a bit. But really, holidays get stressful. And I know there’s nothing that relaxes me more than an hour spent with my favorite massage therapist.
According to the Mayo Clinic, while there haven’t been enough studies to absolutely confirm the benefits of massage, some studies are showing that massages can help with:
- stress relief
- managing anxiety and/or depression
- pain and stiffness
- blood pressure
- infant growth
- healing injuries
- boosting your immune system
- cancer treatment.
There are some risks associated with a massage, such as pain from too much pressure, so you should chat with your doctor if you experience any unusual side effects. Also, if you’re pregnant, you should definitely talk to your obstetrician first, though massage can be helpful as long as it’s performed by someone specially trained to perform massages on pregnant women.
